Plant and mule deer responses to pinyon‐juniper removal by three mechanical methods

چکیده
Abstract Land managers in western North America often reverse succession by removing pinyon ( Pinus spp.) and juniper Juniperus trees to reduce fire risk increase forage for wildlife livestock. Because prescribed carries inherent risks, mechanical methods such as chaining, roller‐chopping, mastication are used. Mechanical differ cost the size of woody debris produced, may differentially impact plant animal responses. We implemented a randomized, complete‐block, split‐plot experiment December 2011 Piceance Basin, northwestern Colorado, USA, compare explore seeding (subplot) interactions. assessed vegetation 1‐, 2‐, 5‐, 6‐years post‐treatment, mule deer Odocoileus hemionus ) response via GPS locations 3–8 years post‐treatment. By 2016, treated plots had 3–5 times higher perennial grass cover ~10 cheatgrass Bromus tectorum than untreated control plots. Roller‐chopped both highest non‐native annual forb cover, when seeded, density bitterbrush Purshia tridentata ), nutritious shrub used deer. Masticated use during summer fall, leaving less available winter. Days winter from point chained roller‐chopped was ~70% plots, while masticated similar Mule appears related combination hiding resulting residual debris, availability. provide best forage, but or applied dispersed security be better options at large scales invasive species concerns exist.

We compared bed sites selected by desert mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus eremicus) to nearby random sites to assess bed site features. Thermal cover of bed sites (i.e., vegetation -75 cm high that provided shade for a deer) was highest in summer (X = 43.7% + 4.1 SE) compared to spring (29.7% + 4.4), winter (33.5% ? 3.1), and autumn (39.8% + 4.0); however, selection for bed sites with thermal cov...

Monitoring mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) on a former plutonium production site along the Columbia River at the Hanford Site, Washington (USA) revealed 27 (23%) of 116 adult males had unusually shaped, velvet-covered antlers and abnormally developed testicles. We captured 32 males to examine age-class differences and the ratio of affected to unaffected deer and determine whether affected testi...
